RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
O.K. Here I am. Just bought my first Saito last week. . .a FA-125. Somebody sign me up! I am hooked on these 4 strokes.
Currently on a Harrier 3-D, but plan on putting it on the hanger 9 Pulse XT 125 when I can get my hands on one.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
you'll love 'me...i love everyone of mine.
flew the bipe today.....most excellent handleing aircraft
old engine has so carb issues but a little cleaning and blowing out of the jets and i think she'll be fine.
no deadsticks no idle issues....just high speed floating...thats just something plugged up with old fuel goop.
i have some pics and video of it, if my son will just send them to me

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
OK club saito members,
I have a saito 120S. The high speed needle came out in flight and down came my showtime 4d. Well it seems the brass spray bar broke off even with the carb block. How do I get what remains of the spray bar out of the block? I have taken the carb apart, but cant get the broken part out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Alan

It looks like an ACE model, like their 4-40 or 4-60 Bipe (similar to the SIG 4-star 40 or 60), maybe that will give you someplace to start with it. I think they're not around any more.

Hobbsy,
Can you re-post your photo of the slave control arm on the motor mount for throttle control you posted a year or two back? I can't find the post, and need ideas to assist me in mounting an inverted 82 on a CMP 50 size zero.
Thanks in advance.

I think TexasSkyPilot is right about this one. I've got what my wife might call an unheathy love affair with the D.B. Matthews 4-20, 4-40, ....well you get the idea! got two kits right now and a set of 4-40 bipe plans in the mail headed here now. The lack of struts is the first thing I noticed about it. The fin and rear turtledeck shape, if we could see it, would tell the tale for sure. The bipe plans call for a 48" WS if that helps.
Finally got a full-size zoom and I'm almost 100%sure of it now. It's a good looking plane. Like I said, I'm a sucker for 'em!

If you take the valve covers off, you can put oil in the valve bodies, replace the covers, leave the plug out, chuck the crank in a drill (all the way against the thrust plate so as not to get the threads, it takes very little pressure to hold it as you are not turning against normal compression. IT WORKS), heat up the top with the drier, and turn it over with the drill. Just keep doing this till you feel the compression come back when you block the plug hole with your finger. When you have compression, replace the plug and run the engine. I have gotten full compression back this way.

having taken out the top and check the valves inside, I depress both the valves down, it manage to open, then I proceed to oil the inside and heat the valve area.
Assemble it back and gained about 20% compression back. Tomorrow may try to start the engine hope this works

Just checking, you DID put the glow plug back in after you injected the fuel, right?
You may need to see if the valves are seating. If one is stuck or sticking, or bent, you won't get compression. I had a friend who Removed the backplate and the glow plug and soaked a motor in Transmission fluid to get buildup off the valves and other parts inside. The valves did release after that. The cleanup was kind of gooey, though. Still, he didn't have to completely tear it down.

I miss that out!
There is no compression!! so i tried to inject fuel direct in to engine via glow plug hole, still no avail.

Does the 180 have compression

I could use a finger to turn the prop 360deg.
Have check thru and make sure all moving parts are moving, from the valves to carb..
If still can't start then i suppose the next best thing is to send it back to Saito factory..

find the complete combustion cycle of a Four stroke engine. I have done this for the very same reason you are having difficulty understanding how the engine works. Kevin

CD Webb....
Yeah, they ARE pretty planes....and they fly really well too. I feel old when I think of all my old hobby suppliers going out of business.... Ace among them...
****SIGH****
Jephry,
This seems to be a classic sticky valve case, if you've got compression one time and then you don't the next. Since you have not gotten it running you cannot exclude a possible camshaft missing teeth.
You need to find a way to get some transmission fluid into the valve section and let it soak. If a valve is sticking, it has something on its stem that's stopping it, OR it could possibly be bent. But bent valves are not very common.
Don't give up, you may have to get into the motor and check the camshaft for missing teeth as well. These are not complicated, so you shouldn't have to worry much.

Here is the video of my P-38 equipped with twin Saito 100s sporting Turbo Headers.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbvNyoFpl-4
www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2IQ8ugSSW0
www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTM46P1ilJY
Noticed changes from the stock mufflers:
-about 200 RPM increase
-faster throttle responce
-with the twin, the engines are more evenly matched in needle setting, within one click of each other (not sure why)
-less goo down the airplane with the pipes I have on the mufflers (now out the bottom)
-slightly more presure to the tank resulting in a little leaner needle setting
-much better look with the mufflers now in the cowls
-uses less fuel now but still has good smoke
-very nice sound
-lighter and more compact than stock mufflers resulting in less strain on the system from vibration
Good job on the engineering of these after market Saito parts Jim.

Do you have a before/after bit of video illustrating the difference in sound between the stock mufflers and the new mufflers? That might sell a few more mufflers for Jim. I'm a capitalist at heart - sales are good when deserved. And they are in this instance.

Hi fellow Saito owners,
I have a 100 and am wondering if anyone uses the optional velocity stack. I have heard people say that it actually lowers the top end rpms. Anyone have experience with it??

I'll back up what Jim says, the velocity stacks do not alter performance but some claim 15% increase in fuel economy, it stands to reason when you notice the reduced amount of fuel on the firewall.
RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Guys,
Thanks for the help with my Saito 180. The oil has seemed to do the trick. The motor now has compression and turns over much more smoothly now. It will probably sit another week before I am ready to run the motor. I am wondering what size prop to use. Presently, I have a 16-8 zinger bolted on the motor. The motor will be installed in a Hanger 9 Edge 540 (the older 1.20 size plane). This should come in around 12-14 lbs when completely assembled (It has been sitting awhile!). My flying style really isn't 3D, just basic aerobatic flight.
Thanks guys
Paul
